The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) regulates video surveillance in Australia. This page sets out the framework we work to, and the documentation we supply with each deployment.
Regulatory framework
- Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) — particularly APP 1 (open and transparent management), APP 3 (collection), APP 6 (use and disclosure), APP 11 (security) and APP 8 (cross-border disclosure).
- OAIC Guidance on Video Surveillance — particularly the 2023 guidance on privacy impact assessments for AI-enabled CCTV.
- State laws — Surveillance Devices Acts in NSW, VIC, QLD and WA, which govern the use of optical surveillance devices in workplaces and public spaces.
- Work Health and Safety obligations — particularly the safe-design and consultation requirements that apply when monitoring workers.
How we help operators meet these
PIA support
We provide a privacy impact assessment pack for your site, populated with our architecture, data flows and retention schedules.
Notice and signage
We provide recommended signage copy and intranet language for workers, aligned with state surveillance-device notice requirements.
Retention schedules
We default to no raw-video retention. If you need footage for an incident, we help you define a lawful retention period and a deletion process.
Questions your auditor will ask
- Does raw video leave the site? — No. Inference runs on the Edge Unit.
- Are individuals identified across cameras? — No. We do not ship re-identification.
- Is data hosted in Australia? — Yes. Sydney only.
- Are workers informed? — We provide the notice; you post it.
- How long is data retained? — Events, 90 days by default, configurable. Raw video, not retained by us.
Before deployment
- Run a short PIA. We will provide the pack.
- Consult affected workers or tenants, as required by state law and your WHS obligations.
- Post appropriate notice signage at every camera view.
- Define a written retention and access policy before the first unit ships.
Legal note. The guidance on this page reflects our experience with Australian deployments, not a legal opinion. Your own counsel should review your specific arrangement.
