Canopy runs perception at the edge, transmits structured events, and hosts aggregation in Sydney. The stack is built so that raw video stays on the customer site.
Architecture overview
Three layers, each designed so that data minimisation is the default, not an afterthought:
Perception
Models run on Edge Units at your site. Frames are processed in memory and discarded. No raw video is stored on the box beyond a short rolling buffer for crash recovery.
Event stream
What leaves the site is a small structured event: a count, a zone ID, a timestamp, a confidence score. JSON over TLS 1.3 to our Sydney-hosted control plane.
Insights & action
Events are aggregated, combined with your own business data, and surfaced in the console or pushed to the tools you already run.
Under Australian law
The Australian Privacy Principles apply to personal information. Raw video of identifiable people is personal information. When a camera stream leaves your site and crosses a border, APP 8 applies. Because the edge discards frames, the event stream is metadata: counts, zone IDs, timestamps.
Our platform
- A signed model pipeline. Models are built in our Sydney office, signed, and deployed over the air. We can push a critical patch to every unit in the country without touching a customer network.
- A local event bus. The Edge Unit queues events on disk. When the network comes back, they sync in order. We have customers who have run for weeks with no WAN and zero lost data.
- A multi-tenant control plane. Single-tenant options available for regulated industries. All data stays in Sydney.
- A rule engine. Most triggers customers ask for can be expressed as a threshold over a zone and a time window. We expose that as a configuration UI, not a code change.
Transparency
We publish the JSON schema for every event type we emit. We publish the model cards for every inference model we ship. We will walk a customer's security reviewer through the architecture, including a test unit, on request. There is no part of the system that is opaque to a customer's own audit.
